TAC TOWARDS ZERO

ZERO IS THE ONLY ACCEPTABLE NUMBER

Towards Zero is Victoria's plan to ensure no one is seriously injured on our roads.
It acknowledges that we all face risks on our roads. But our choice to use the road shouldn't cost us our lives.
That's why we need to ensure we have a safe transport system in place. Together we can build a system that protects us from our own mistakes and those of others.
The Towards Zero road safety principles are also in place across most Australian states and territories. Overseas, many other countries have adopted the same principles (also known as Vision Zero), including: Sweden, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Norway and large cities in the US, such as New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago and Boston.

SAFETY BARRIERS SAVE LIVES

Currently drivers on Victoria’s regional roads face greater risk due to higher speed limits, longer journeys and the quality of some country roads. We know this imbalance needs to change, and to help we are building many more safety barriers across Victoria.
The safety barriers we are installing can reduce fatal and serious injury by up to 85% in run-off road crashes and it’s these crashes in particular that affect regional drivers. With this considered, it’s easy to see how these safety barriers are helping us work towards the goal of zero deaths on our roads.
See how we are changing country roads and saving lives.

SAFE ROADS

Improvements to infrastructure are ongoing, because roads and roadsides play a vital part in helping to reduce the severity of a crash or prevent crashes from occurring in the first place.

SAFE SPEEDS

When speed limits are set appropriately and drivers stick to those limits, the effectiveness of safety initiatives implemented on our roads can be enhanced.

SAFE VEHICLES

Improving how well a vehicle protects people in a crash, or how well it can avoid a crash in the first place, can help to reduce trauma. In fact, if everybody upgraded their vehicle to the safest in its class, road trauma would drop by a third.

SAFE PEOPLE

A safe road network is a shared responsibility in which all of us play an important part. By acting in a safe manner we can protect ourselves, and protect those around us, helping Victoria to move Towards Zero.
