The name “SFL YMCA Monash Netball competition” doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, but in terms of growth of local sporting comps it really doesn’t get much better than this.
Originally formed by replicating the successful model already used in regional sporting clubs, the competition has come a long way in the 3 years of its existence and now boasts an impressive 36 teams across 19 clubs. Not that long ago in 2012 there was just a handful of clubs formed by the wags, sisters, mothers and friends of SFL players. with just enough to cover 2 tournaments, now there are 4 divisions!
Sure, sometimes it can feel akin to picking hens teeth to get a team together who are able-bodied and available to train and play on Saturday mornings but when it does happen the benefits to the individual and the club are absolutely worth the effort put in - even more so when you get to celebrate a win obviously!
It has to be said that none of this would have been made possible without the ongoing support and involvement of all players, coaches, team managers, umpires, staff, volunteers, friends, family, footy players and all associated organizations.
This year, Bentleigh’s 3 teams have had their best season yet, with both the Division 1’s and 2’s making it to the preliminary finals. The Div 1’s almost made it through to the grand final had it not been for some questionable scoring procedures, but its nothing that hasn’t happened in local sporting competitions before and next year we’ll come back stronger then ever!
